Ground Casualty

SGT John T. Davis was a Unit Supply Sergeant with Headquarters & Headquarters Company (HHC), 84th Engineer Battalion, 937th Engineer Group, 18th Engineer Brigade. In 1969, the 18th Engineer Brigade was committed to a variety of operational support missions. Its combat and construction engineers worked on airfield and bridge repairs, mine sweeps, base camp defenses, aircraft revetments, tactical roads, and land clearing operations. In II Corps, the 937th Group’s 84th Construction Battalion erected high chain-link stand-off fences around tank farms on airbases at An Khe, Qui Nhon, and Pleiku. Davis’ role with his unit’s operations was to make sure supplies and equipment was being received, inventoried, and distributed to the engineers. On the morning of May 28, 1969, Davis suffered a mental breakdown in the billets area of his unit’s base camp in Binh Dinh Province. He reportedly fired his sidearm in the camp area, shooting up a transformer and glass insulators on a utility pole, and fired into the eaves of several buildings. An estimated 20-30 rounds were discharged. A chaplain approached and attempted to calm him and was taken hostage. Davis then turned the weapon on himself, taking his own life. He was forty-five years old. At the time of his death, Davis had recently received a reduction in rank and was under arrest in his quarters for an earlier shooting incident at Phu Tai. In that instance, he had fired a round into the air then returned his pistol to its holster when the weapon discharged another round which ricocheted and struck a Vietnamese woman in the elbow. An investigation into the incident was in progress. Davis was a Korean War veteran with over eighteen years of service with the Army.
