Misadventure (Friendly Fire)

SP4 Paul J. Luecking and SP4 Tony Anguiano were infantrymen assigned to D Company, 1st Battalion, 52nd Infantry, 198th Infantry Brigade. On July 24, 1971, they were in a night defensive position when a friendly artillery round fell short and landed near their location. Both soldier were hit by fragments from the exploding shell. SP4 Anguiano died of his wounds. SP4 Luecking was medically evacuated to a military hospital where his left leg was amputated. He was also injured about the chest, right arm, and right leg. His injuries required he be transferred to a hospital in Japan on August 10, 1971. He was later returned to the U.S. where he succumbed to his injuries on July 29, 1973, at Jefferson Barracks Veterans Administration Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Remembering An American Hero

Dear SP4 Tony Anguiano, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

If at some time in the immediate future someone from the Anguyiano family would contact me at the address below, I would really appreciate it. I served wTony and we became fast friends and I also met his sister in Germany. I continue to grieve his absence and he will stay wme always.
