Tom and my Gradfather

I have been reading my grandfather’s journal from Vietnam and found a reference to the day Tom passed.
He wrote, “ Today what can I say, the most tragic day of my life. I have lost friends and relatives before, but I was never so close and it wasn’t for such a foolish thing as war among men. Tom Davie was as close or closer to me than anyone here. I had more love for him than for anyone else, but to watch him, pass away and not be able to help is incredibly painful.”

My grandfather Ralph Ragland was in the copilot seat that day and tried to save him. He writes about photos he had seen of Tom’s wife and two children, and that he kept thinking of them and how terrible an ordeal they will have to endure without him.

From a squadron member

I lived across the "hooch" from Tom at Bien Hoa and was leading the formation the day he died. He was near the end of his tour. I'll not forget him.

do not stand at my grave and weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.
