Final Mission of PFC Andrew J. Daniel
On the morning of February 2, 1968, the Tet Offensive was in its third day when A Company, 506th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, combat assaulted into an area near Xuan Phong hamlet in Binh Thuan Province, RVN, in an attempt to engage enemy forces operating in nearby Phan Thiet. A Company came into contact with a reinforced NVA/VC company in Xuan Phong which was there guarding the 482nd Viet Cong Battalion Headquarters at the hamlet. An intense battle ensued, lasting throughout that afternoon into the evening. Second Platoon was on point, and during the early stages of close-in fighting among the buildings and houses of the hamlet, they sustained heavy casualties from the overwhelming enemy heavy weapons fire. PFC Andrew J. Daniel was wounded on the porch of a large two-story house and needed rescue. Several attempts were made to recover the seriously wounded paratrooper. SFC James A. Bunn was killed while trying to enter the rear of the large house. FST Phillip R. Chassion next attempted to assist the beleaguered troops after hearing over the company radio concerning “men down.” As he approached the rear of the house, he was shot several times by enemy fire and died almost instantly. Shortly thereafter, Alpha Company withdrew into a night defensive position. A rescue team returned later that night and entered enemy-held area and recovered the bodies of Bunn, Chassion, and Daniel. Chassion was posthumously promoted to Master Sergeant and Daniel to Corporal. [Taken from the book “My Gift to You” by Jerald W. Berry and virtualwall.org]
