Howie Andrews

I served with Howie in Viet Nam at the 101st JAGC office at Camp Eagle where I was a defense counsel and he was waiting on a direct commission to be a JAGC Captain. Afterwards he was reassigned to a different office in Viet Nam and I learned later of his tragic death. I think of him every Memorial Day and many other days as well and also visit him at the Wall whenever I come to Washington. Howie was such a good man and so well liked. He was the last person anyone would have wanted to die so young. Harry Ashby Dickerson

remembering Howard Andrews

I think Howard was the only army JAGC officer (lawyer) killed in the entire war. I was a JAGC lawyer assigned to the 18th MP Brigade with my duty inside the infamous Long Binh Jail ("LBJ") when Howie was killed. Many JAGC officers came to the LBJ to talk with clients and witnesses to prepare for courts martial. Howie was there a few hours before his death, of which I learned the next day.
I didn't know him well, but in my limited interactions with him, he was most cordial and agreeable. RIP

Do Not Stand at my Grave and Weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
