To my bunker buddy

Jack and I got Viet Nam about the same time and were assigned to the third platoon Bravo Co. 2/18th Infantry Battalion of the First Infantry Division. I only knew Jack for about two months before he was killed. We were two FNG's so they put us together. We dug a couple of bunkers together, shared stories of home, and generally had a good time together. One time we were in our perimeter somewhere in jungle clearing when we saw sparks shooting over the tree line and guys started yelling "incoming." Jack and I jumped in our sand bagged bunker. It had some steel supports so we could stack sand bags on top. There was a thud on the top and we just looked at each other and Jack said "I think we just got lucky." When the mortar attack was over we found an unexploded round stuck in the top of the bunker. We laughed a bit but it was an eye opener.

I think of him often. He was a good guy. And a lot of other guys too.
