Remembering My Dad's Best Friend

Hi Billy,
My name is Tina and my father Roy Baker grew up with you. He's told me through the years how amazing you were and how much fun you guys had growing up in Wrightsville and Hensley, Arkansas. He misses you dearly. He says he remembers how young and vibrant you were and how when he saw your body at the funeral you looked like you had lived 100 lives-old and battered. He told me that you told him to do everything he could to not go to Vietnam and he cherished the letters you sent home. I think about you sometimes Billy-about what your friendship meant to my dad, about how you were years before the war growing up with my dad, and I cry, I grieve for the life you had left to live-getting a job, finding a wife and starting a family. My dad just turned 70 and this coming December you would have been 70 too. My dad says it is hard to imagine you at 70. I really wish you were here but I am humbled and honored to share the connection with you through my dad. I honor you and all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. You all are the very definition of heroes. You did not die in vain. I love you and rest in eternal peace and power and love.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear PFC Billy Cunningham, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
