Ground Casualty
Pfc Barry A. Cullison was a mortarman serving with Headquarters & Service Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, III Marine Amphibious Force. During the month of March 1967, the 2/5 Marines were located at An Hoa Combat Base in the Da Nang area while the rest of the regiment was at Chu Lai. The battalion was under the administrative control of the regiment but placed at the disposal of the 1st Marine Division command. On March 31st, Cullison died at An Hoa in what Marine casualty reports described as an accidental discharge incident. Cullison was shot four times with a .45 caliber pistol by another Marine, sustaining wounds to his face, head, neck, and abdomen. It is unclear how he came to be wounded so many times in an event that investigators documented as “accidental.” The Marines did not make public any details of an investigation into the incident. A Marine volunteer, Cullison was 19 years old.
