Final Mission of 1LT Roger W. Anderson Jr.

In late 1970, the 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) conducted combat operations in War Zone D along the Military Region I and II boundary, southern Phuoc Long Province, Long Khanh Province, northeastern Binh Duong Province, and northeastern Bien Hoa Province. The brigade specifically sought out two North Vietnamese Army units, SR-5 and the 81st Rear Service Group. Further objectives were the interdiction of infiltration routes used by the two enemy units and preventing their mortar and rocket attacks against the brigade base camp at Camp Gorvad in Binh Duong Province. During military actions on the late morning of December 1st, elements of C Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment were inspecting some thatch huts and bunkers 23 kilometers (14.2 miles) east of Dong Xoai (Don Luan) city in Phuoc Long Province when they received small arms fire from an estimated 8-10 enemy combatants concealed in the bunker complex. The cavalrymen returned fire with unit weapons supported by artillery and aerial units. Contact was broken after 15 minutes resulting in one American killed and four wounded. The lost cavalryman was 1LT Roger W. Anderson Jr. Enemy losses in the engagement were undetermined. Tac Officer OCS 19-70

Lt Anderson was a TAC officer in my Infantry OCS class 50th Company at Ft Benning. He had a different platoon, as I had Lt Zieg as a Tact Officer. Lt Anderson was tough but fair with our preparation alway foremost in his mind. I respected him for that. RIP lieutenant, you served us and your country well

Roger Anderson, A Highlight

I met Roger when I transferred to Valparaiso my sophomore year. Roger took me under his wing and treated me like a brother. He then actually gave me the invitation to become a fraternity brother. I was stunned to learn of his death 2 years after the fact and wrote a letter to his parents. I later visited the wall, traced his name and could hardly walk away. I remember him every year at this time
