My Guardian Angel

There is hardly a day that goes by that I don’t remember Butch. If not for Butch I would probably have been in his place. I have always felt this young man from Tennessee saved my life by taking the assignment I was destined to fill. We traveled together the whole way from the US to Dong Tam, and eventually rode in the back of a 2 1/2 ton to the base camp location of the 1/11 th FA. We carried our duffle bags to the Hqs Btry orderly room to receive our assignments. Two jobs were available, RTO for a Forward Observer, and Operations Specialist. 1st SGT James Joyce asked me which job I preferred first. We talked many times, and you could not have asked for a better person considering the circumstances. Though we’re both in our early 20’s I see and remember Butch as we have aged together. Thank you Butch for your sacrifice for me. The has been no greater honor than to have served with you.
