Remembering An American Hero
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter
Remembrance
Our families had both moved to a new tract development called San Ramon Village in Dublin, California in 1961. Richard and I attended portable classrooms for the conclusion of 5th grade that spring. Richard was very outgoing and talkative whereas I was more quiet. Our teacher, Mrs. Van Hoosier, caught us talking in class and for the very first time I was kept after class, along with Richard, for disobeying the rules!
Richard used to do things to embarass me as we walked to and from the library in the evenings for study...such as singing. He was outgoing and athletic but I don't think team sports were really his thing. In high school he went out for wrestling and the pole vault. I do have an address of record for his family. They moved back to New York after he was killed in action. His mother's name is Angelina Covert. The address is: 3887 Factory Street, Burdett, NY 14818-9612. I tried to contact her by mail last year but did not get a response. His father was Richard Covert. Richard was the oldest. The next oldest siblings were Sandra and Robert. I hope this info helps. The picture was from the local newspaper obituary. I hope my digital copy works for you.
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
