My Uncle...whom I never met.
I never met my uncle Ramon. I know of him because my father told me about him...not just his about his death, but also the memories he had growing up with him.
I found a website a few years ago, and someone who knew my uncle wrote to me. He said he never understood why not him as it was clear he had survivor's remorse. He was grateful, though. He told me my uncle was a great person, funny, full of life and had so many plans. I was told my uncle was a badass and that makes me feel better. He said my uncle saved his and others' lives. His platoon got ambushed. My uncle told everyone to go ahead while he stayed back to distract and he would soon be behind them. However it did not happen that way...
Ramon probably saved my dad's life. My father was called in for a draft. While he was in line, a man approached my father and asked him if he knew a Ramon Cortes. My father explained it was his brother. The man told my father to go home, which prevented the drafting and deployment process he would have undergone otherwise...
I think of how young Ramon was. I'm 46 years old and thinking of 24 years old... He was so young...
So to my Uncle Ramon, I say thank you.
To all those who work tirelessly so that we and future generations do not forget. Thank you.
For those who honor, and still pay your respects. Thank you.
It warms my heart that these soldiers dead and alive are being recognized and honored.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear SP4 Ramon Cortes-Rosa, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter
