Ground Casualty
SP4 Jerry W. Corkern was assigned to 133rd Ordnance Detachment (Explosive Disposal), Chu Lai, Quang Tin Province, RVN. On November 26, 1966, SP4 Corkern was on temporary duty to the 191st Ordnance Battalion (Ammunition) Explosive Disposal Section, Cam Ranh Bay, Khanh Hoa Province, RVN. On this day, SP4 Corkern suffered fatal head and chest wounds when a Chinese Communist stick fragmentation grenade exploded while attempting to disassemble it. MSG Clarence H. Woolery of the 191st Ordnance Battalion (Ammunition) Explosive Disposal Section was also wounded in the incident. SP4 Corkern was the first U.S. Army EOD specialist killed in the Republic of Vietnam.
