Final Mission of BM2 William M. Comer Jr.
BM2 William M. Comer Jr. was a Boatswain Mate serving on the Monitor M-91-2, part of River Squadron 9, Task Force 117 (TF-117). Shortly after midnight on the morning of February 1, 1968, units of River Assault Division 91 were transiting south on the Ruong Stream in Giao Duc District, seven miles northeast of Sa Dec, when they were ambushed by a heavily bunkered enemy force. The Viet Cong unleashed automatic weapon, rocket, and recoilless-rifle fire from both banks of the 30-yard wide stream. Troop laden Armored Troop Carriers, Assault Support Patrol Boats, monitors, and artillery barges retaliated with an array of firepower at point-blank range against both banks of the stream. The enemy fire was silenced and an undetermined number of enemy were killed. BM2 Comer was the only U.S. Navyman killed when he died instantly after being hit during the 25-minute running gun battle. Remembering An American Hero
Dear BM2 William Marvin Comer Jr, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter
