Biography

Samuel Charles Benton, a resident of Royal Oak, passed away on Friday, May 26, 2023 at the age of 73. The son of William and Joan, he was born on October 11, 1949 in Detroit.

Sam attended Kimball High School, but left early to serve his country during the Vietnam War. Upon his return home, he earned his GED, took classes at the University of North Carolina, and studied carpentry in a trade school. Sam proudly served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, the Navy in San Diego, and the Navy Reserves in North Chicago. On October 1, 1983, in the woods north of Chicago, he said "I do" to the love of his life Elizabeth "Libby" Setzer. Sam began his professional career as a draftsman in the automotive industry, and retired as a salesman from Dassault Systemes (IBM).

An avid golfer, Sam volunteered his services at the Royal Oak Golf Course in exchange for endless time on the green- he was happy to be anywhere with a tee box. Sam rooted for the Detroit Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings. He traveled extensively with Libby, visiting Hawaii and St. Maarten early in life and Chicago, Florida, San Francisco, Rocky Mountains, Black Hills, and the Crossroads of Mississippi in their later years. If Sam had control of the radio, you could count on him playing the blues. He loved serenading his family and friends with his self-taught guitar skills. He loved the time he could spend with his buddies. Sam will be remembered for his quick wit, kindness, easy-going nature, and devotion to his family.

Beloved husband of Libby, joined in love for 39 years. Loving father of Joshua, Melissa, Zachary (Summer), and Jacob (Kimberly). Cherished grandfather of Tyler, Brandon, Ryley, Ruby, and Asher. Dear brother of Cherilynn, Michelle, and Debra. Proud uncle to several nieces and nephews. Treasured friend to many.
