Biography

Stanley H. Adkins was born on January 3, 1947, in Shelbyville, Indiana - the first baby born in the county that year! He loved sports. In high school played football, ran track and set a school record for hurdles. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1966. On October 10, 1966, he joined the Marines with his cousin on the buddy plan. In February 1968, he was deployed to Vietnam. In April 1968, he stepped on a landmine while on patrol. He was awarded the Purple Heart and returned home as a Cpl. He spent the rest of his life bravely living with the effects of his injuries. In 1969, he took a job as a salesman with a local manufacturing company, assigned to their regional sales office in New York City. In 1971 he married Lynne Hamling of New Jersey. They were married 50 years and together they raised a son & daughter. They were later blessed with 4 granddaughters and 2 grandsons. He continued to work as a salesman until his retirement. Stan was very patriotic and loved his Country, he was extremely proud to have served as a US Marine. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he cherished every moment he spent with them. He loved playing golf, hunting and his favorite - taking his boat out to fish in Barnegat Bay. He liked watching football, basketball and old John Wayne movies. He also enjoyed carving decoys and other waterfowl in his retirement. He passed away September 1 3, 2021, after his long battle with the injuries he received while serving his country.
