He and his twin brother, David, graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1963 and were on the basketball team that won the Boys Iowa State Basketball Tournament that year. He then attended Northwest Missouri State University. He married Greta Moes on January 15, 1971. They were blessed with two sons, Ryan and Brad. He retired from Midwest Manufacturing in Kellogg, Iowa in 2009. Dennis participated in sports, coached his sons' baseball teams, and always enjoyed watching sports. He and his brothers and brothers-inlaw played golf in the summer and played cards in the winter nearly every Sunday in recent years. He also golfed in a league for several years. He was fortunate to travel to Washington D.C. in May of 2013 with the Jasper County Freedom Flight. Dennis was drafted into the Army in April of 1966. He served as a lineman in the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), stationed at Nha Trang, Vietnam from October 1966 to July 1968. After being discharged from the Army he bought a 1968 Pontiac GTO, which he enjoyed and owned for the rest of his life. He passed away on October 2, 2019, after being diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer. He was a very special family member and is truly missed by all his family and friends!
