Gary was born May 19, 1945, in Lake Placid, N.Y., where his dad was stationed at the end of W.W.II. Gary grew up in Sioux City, Iowa, graduating from high school in 1963. In 1965, Gary joined the Iowa National Guard and married Dianne Anderson. They made their home in Sioux City until Gary’s guard unit was mobilized and stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado. Gary was deployed to Vietnam Nam with a regular army unit on January 1, 1969. He served as a sergeant in a mortar platoon. He was able to return to Iowa in September of 1969, returning to college at the University of Iowa only 2 days after arriving home. Gary and Dianne made their home in Newton, Iowa, where they raised their three children and went on to have seven grandchildren. Gary was a successful businessman and community leader. He owned an insurance agency and was active in several community organizations. He most treasured his membership in the American Legion where he was a long-standing member of the Honor Guard. He loved having his grandkids watch him carrying the American flag in the Fourth of July parade. He was honored to be able to be part of the firing squad at his fellow veterans’ funerals. Gary passed away on July 14, 2019, from complications of diabetes and other ailments exacerbated by exposure to Agent Orange while in Viet Nam.
