Biography

Arthur Dayton was born in Webster City, Iowa on August 4, 1945. He always wanted to be a Marine so he joined the Corps in September after graduation in 1965. While in Vietnam he was shot 3 different times. The last time was his leg and that sent him home to Great Lakes Navel hospital in Chicago. He received 3 purple hearts for his injuries in Vietnam. He married Marcia Schnell on December of 1969. They had 3 daughters, 2 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, and 1 great-grandson. He worked for Electrolux for 30 plus years and retiring due to health reasons in 2001. He was Chairman of the UAW Veterans committee at Electrolux for many years. He was instrumental in starting that Veterans group. He helped with UAW Region 4 Vets Day Iowa and many other programs in Knoxville. Also he helped with The Homeless Veterans Stand Down in Des Moines. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, DAV, VFW, VVA, and the Purple Heart. He was past commander of the Purple Heart. He was very active in all of these organizations and went to Washington DC to help get legislation passed for veterans. He also volunteered at the Rockwell City Corrections facility where he visited with veteran prisoners on a monthly basis. He always took an array of doughnuts for the guys which they really appreciated. He passed in 2009 from heart disease and diabetes due to Agent Orange. He also dealt with PTSD. He loved his family and he included all veterans part of his family. He helped several local vets thru some difficult times. He is missed by his family and friends and will always be missed.
