Colonel Ernest Adkins was inducted into the Army on April 8, 1969 as a Private. He was honorably discharged from the Army on March 8, 1971 as a Staff Sergeant after serving in the Vietnam War with the 101st Airborne Division. Later he joined the Ohio Army National Guard in 1973 as a Second Lieutenant with the 272nd Engineer Brigade. Ernie is the son of Julia and stepfather Willard Blair. He departed this life on March 7, 1999. He is greatly missed by his wife, Candace, and entire family. We honor him today for his years of service and accomplishments to our country in his role as a soldier and as a leader in the Ohio Army National Guard. Ernie's dedication to the military is exemplified by the fact that even though he was drafted he continued to serve his country and attained the rank of full Colonel. He was proud to point out that only a few could claim this accomplishment. He wore the eagle with pride and was honored to be called a "Full Bird" or a "Full Colonel".
