He received two purple hearts, ARCOM w/V Device and 2d OLC, Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/60 device, I O/S Bar, Combat Infantryman Badge and Expert Badge w/Rifle (M-14). Following his military service, David married Mary Ann Geist on May 1, 1971 and had their son, Erick James Anderson. Exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam took its toll on David's health and earned him the nickname "Awesome" after ten surgeries and major health events. David was a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans of Virginia and the Gilbert Veterans of Foreign Wars. Additionally, he was a member of the Minnesota Trappers Association and Ridge Riders Snowmobile Club and served for many year as president of Little Birch Lake Association. David loved spending as much time as possible at the cabin he called "Camp David". Whether it was the middle of winter or in the heat of summer, you'd find him there enjoying his hobbies of hunting, fishing, trapping and four-wheeling with Mary Ann and Erick. The coffee was always on and the fire-pit was always ready to light for the many stopping in to visit this kind and compassionate man. Though in pain daily, he never let it stop him from enjoying the things and people he loved. He truly was a gentleman.
