Agent Orange Awareness - 08/10/2020

Bring Light

The Vietnam War may be over, but the battle continues for many Vietnam veterans. Nearly 3 million service members served in Vietnam and most returned home. But since then, thousands of Vietnam veterans have fought illnesses related to Agent Orange exposure.  This deadly toxin has impacted the lives of thousands of veterans and their families but is largely unknown to most Americans.  Join with us and YOU can help “bring light” to the suffering Agent Orange has spread since its first use on August 10th, 1961.

We hope you’ll lend your voice and support to our first ever Agent Orange Awareness Day! Your support will help bring to light the fight of thousands of our veterans and their family members.

Sponsor a Candle

While the deadline to sponsor a candle has passed, you can still support our ongoing Agent Orange Awareness efforts.

From: BJ Grubb

Message: My husband, Jack Grubb, died January 3, 2015 from Myelodysplastic Syndrome, (MDS), a blood cancer.  He was what they call a ‘blue water” sailor in the Navy.  His ship, the USS Somers,  was ordered into a water way off the shore of Vietnam and the guys were sent ashore to support the US Army ground troops there.  It was steamy hot, high humidity and high temperature.  When  air support flew over the area, the guys cheered…while the planes sprayed Agent Orange to exfoliate the jungle vegetation and anything else on the ground below…including all of the American troops.  Of course, at that time the troops didn’t realize what was being sprayed and reveled in the cooling mist which relieved  the burning heat momentarily.  As the years passed the chemical slowly did its work on his vascular system and by 2013 Jack was diagnosed with myelodysplasia, a fatal blood cancer stemming from this body’s absorption, over time, of the killer chemical, Agent Orange.  The US government has refused to recognize those “blue water” sailors as victims of Agent Orange and has refused to offer financial assistance to those families  whose loved ones died of  fatal medical conditions arising from exposure to Agent Orange during the Vietnam war.  A gross injustice and disservice to the courageous men and women who VOLUNTEERED to preserve American freedoms.  There needs to be a reckoning  and a recognition of the US governments liability and  culpability in the deaths of thousands of military personnel who were exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam…the government KNEW EXACTLY what they were spraying…and what the results would be…and they, nevertheless, chose to do it..  It is shameful…that it happened and THAT THEY REFUSE TO ADMIT AND MAKE COMPENSATION for the grievous loss of life and the blood on their hands.

From: BJ Grubb

Message: It is a sorrowful day when our government turns its back on those who would fight for American values and freedoms.  A shameful act with no recognition and accountability for knowingly killing its own sons and daughters with not even an apology.  Had Vietnam happened today…under the current administration, this end result would be expected and not a shock but it should not have been in 1965-forward.

From: BJ Grubb

Message: Yes, I am bitter about my husband’s death…and I ultimately hold our government responsible and liable.  Maybe some day there will be enough deaths due to Agent Orange complications to leave a bad taste in some person of authority’s mouth to cause him or her make amends to families who lost their loved ones to Agent Orange…sponsored by the US Government.

From: BJ Grubb

Message: As Jack was dying in a nondescript hospital room at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland Oregon, I promised him I would always take every opportunity to state the facts as I know them about the use of Agent Orange in the Vietnam War by our government,  and I would not hold back in fear of reprisals for speaking those facts.  God Bless those who suffered and died as a result of AGENT ORANGE.

From: Cindy Bunting & Family

Message: In memory of Josrph O. Bunting, Jr. (Col, USAF) Daddy, no words can express how much you mean to us. Thank you for proudly serving & your love of country at a time when the country didn’t support you. AO stole so much of you & from you, especially your beautiful mind & use of your body. We are forever grateful for your life, values, lessons & your love. You are our hero.

From: Cindy, Daughter

Message: Dear Daddy, my hero, my Prince Charming – you’d be so proud of your Grandsons. They are smart, whole & well rounded. You’d be so amazed & interested in their careers & accomplishments. I so wish you could have attended the wedding. You’d be so proud (but not surprised) of the man, husband & father your son has become. He & D have done an amazing job, together & united in love. They have sown good seeds & produced a lovely family with deep roots. You & Mama would be so proud, Daddy.

We were so fortunate that you came home from the war, but we didn’t know the war had come with you & was lurking & waiting to strike. When AO grabbed hold & ravaged your beautiful, intelligent mind, & your talented hands that had done so much, & your legs that jogged before it was ‘cool’, you remained selfless, brave & faced each day with dignity. You have left us now, called home to our Lord. I pray that in the sanctity of death, you were truly able to “put out your hand and touch the face of God.” (adapted from High Flight, by John G. McGee)

I miss you every hour, every day – going to Church or Costco, listening to music, playing Pente, working in the yard or a project. You & Mama were my best friends, my loves, my parents, and then my children. I try to move forward every day and make you all proud, but it’s hard without you all. You are both forever in my heart, and the kindest folks I’ve ever met. You live in my heart & mind, & I will cherish you both as long as I live. Thanks for the memories of true & selfless love, agape. I love you & miss you.
