Memorial assemblage dedicated to U.S. Air Force Airman First Class (A1C) John Stephen Berg and consisting of a photocopied obituary for A1C Berg affixed to a section of linoleum floor tile. The artifact was left at The Wall by W. J. Opferman of Trenton, New Jersey on Veterans Day, November 11, 1986.

MEMORIAL ASSEMBLAGE DEDICATED TO U.S. AIR FORCE AIRMAN FIRST CLASS (A1C) JOHN STEPHEN BERG. THE OBJECT CONSISTS OF A RECTANGULARLY SHAPED SEGMENT OF WHITE AND GRAY LINOLEUM FLOOR TILE WITH PRINTED/HANDWRITTEN LABELS & A PHOTOCOPIED NEWSPAPER OBITUARY AFFIXED TO ITS OBVERSE AND REVERSE OBJECT SURFACES VIA STRIPS OF CLEAR, ADHESIVE TAPE. AT THE OBVERSE OBJECT SURFACE, A TYPEWRITTEN LABEL IN BLACK INK AND BLOCK SCRIPT/ARABIC NUMERALS UPON A RECTANGULARLY SHAPED SEGMENT OF WHITE PAPER IS AFFIXED VIA STRIPS OF CLEAR, ADHESIVE PACKING TAPE TO THE UPPER, CENTER EDGE OF THE LINOLEUM TILE AND SPECIFIES NAME, HOMETOWN, BIRTH/CASUALTY DATES, AND VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL (VVM) WALL LOCATION INFORMATION FOR A1C BERG. SITUATED DIRECTLY BELOW THIS LABEL, A BLACK & WHITE, PHOTOCOPIED CLIPPING OF A NEWSPAPER OBITUARY FOR, "AIRMAN FIRST CLASS JOHN S. BERG" IS AFFIXED TO THE TILE VIA STRIPS OF CLEAR, ADHESIVE PACKING TAPE. AT THE REVERSE OBJECT SURFACE, A HANDWRITTEN WHITE ADHESIVE PAPER LABEL IN BLACK INK AND BLOCK SCRIPT/ARABIC NUMERALS IS AFFIXED TO THE LOWER, CENTER EDGE OF THE LINOLEUM TILE VIA STRIPS OF CLEAR ADHESIVE PACKING TAPE. THE HANDWRITTEN LABEL IDENTIFIES THE ARTIFACT DONOR, "W. J. OPFERMAN", THE DONOR'S HOMETOWN/STATE/ZIP, AND THE DATE OF ARTIFACT DONATION AT THE WALL, "11 NOV 86".

Berg / 16 May 46 - 15 July 67 / 23E 73" / [Obverse object surface, photocopied newspaper clipping] "[black & white photographic image (portrait orientation) of John S. Berg in uniform] / JOHN S. BERG / Berg Dies In Vietnam / Airman First Class John S. Berg, 21, was killed in action July 15 during a rocket attack on Da Nang, Vietnam. / Berg was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph J. Berg of 2 Haslach Avenue, Hamilton Township. / The airman's father said an officer from McGuire Air Force Base came to the Berg home Saturday night with notification that their son was missing. / On Sunday, the same officer and an Air Force chaplain re-turned [sic] to the home with news that Airman Berg had died of multiple injuries suffered when a fire truck was hit by rockets. / Yesterday the family received a telegram from the Air Force confirming their son's death. / Airman Berg ended a 30-day leave at home on April 29 and was in Vietnam the next day." / [Reverse object surface, handwritten label] "Presented by W.
