Non-military issue, commemorative Veterans of World War I, Majove Basin- Post 171 garrison-style cap. The cap was left at The Wall in November 1992 along with an associated handwritten note (VIVE (10629)) by Ms. Willi Looper, the mother of an American service member killed in action in Vietnam in 1966 (and whose father was similarly killed in action in 1942).

ITEM DESCRIPTION

NON-MILITARY ISSUE, VETERANS OF WORLD WAR 1 GARRISON-STYLE CAP, SIZE 6 3/4. THE OBJECT CONSISTS OF A WHITE AND PURPLE POLYESTER-WOOL BLEND GARRISON-STYLE CAP WITH SCARLET PIPING, A WHITE NYLON INTERIOR LINING, AND A BLACK LEATHER SWEATBAND. THE PROPER RIGHT-HAND SIDE OF THE CAP BEARS EMBROIDERED, GOLD, BLOCK LETTERING/ARABIC NUMERALS SPELLING THE PHRASE, "MAJOVE BASIN / V.W.W.1 171." AN EMBROIDERED CLOTH PATCH ORGANIZATIONAL INSIGNIA IS ALSO SEWN TO THE PROPER RIGHT-HAND SIDE OF THE CAP AND CONSISTS OF A SHIELD SHAPE WITH A BLUE FIELD AND A BORDER EMBROIDERED IN GOLD THREAD. INSIDE THE BLUE FIELD OF THE INSIGNIA A SECOND (2ND), WHITE COLORED SHIELD WITH AN EMBROIDERED GOLD BORDER BEARS A REPRESENTATION OF A TWO (2) POPPIES EMBROIDERED IN SCARLET AND GREEN THREAD. INSIDE THE BLUE FIELD OF THE OUTER SHIELD (DIRECTLY ABOVE THE WHITE SHIELD) THE PHRASE, "U*S*A*" IS EMBROIDERED IN GOLD THREAD, WHILE THE CORRESPONDING PHRASES, "*VETERANS OF" AND "WORLD WAR I*" ARE EMBROIDERED IN GOLD THREAD AND BLOCK LETTERING/ROMAN NUMERALS AT THE PROPER RIGHT-HAND AND LEFT-HAND SIDES OF THE WHITE SHIELD, RESPECTIVELY. AFFIXED TO THE CAP, DIRECTLY ABOVE THE EMBROIDERED PHRASE, "MAJOVE BASIN [...]" IS A NON-MILITARY ISSUE, COMMEMORATIVE BRASS PIN CONSISTING OF THE CONJOINED BLOCK LETTERS, "VIET [ABOVE]" AND "NAM [BELOW]" STACKED IN A VERTICAL ORIENTATION. A HANDWRITTEN INSCRIPTION IN BLACK INK AND BLOCK SCRIPT/ARABIC NUMERALS AT THE INTERIOR SURFACE OF THE NYLON LINING IS FROM, "WILLI LOOPER" AND ECHOES SIMILAR ANTI-WAR SENTIMENTS TO THOSE VOICED IN THE HANDWRITTEN NOTE WITH WHICH THE GARRISON-STYLE CAP IS ASSOCIATED (VIVE (10629)). THE OBJECT IS ASSOCIATED WITH VIVE (10629).
