Artifact assemblage dedicated to U.S. Army Private First Class (PFC) Eric Doran Jenkins and consisting of: a handwritten poem inside a hand-addressed envelope. The envelope is addressed, "PFC. ERIC D. JENKINS / [military service ID # redacted] / Co C. 3/22 INF / 25th Div." The handwritten poem is untitled, is authored by PFC Jenkins, and in content draws an analogy between the author and a lonely seashell, "SCRATCHED BY SEAS / AND SANDS OF / TIME". The poem concludes with the lines, "HOLD ME CLOSE / AND YOU WILL HEAR / THE OCEAN ROAR." The artifact assemblage was left at The Wall along with an associated color photographic print (VIVE (9737)) by an anonymous donor in October 1986.

ASSEMBLAGE DEDICATED TO U.S. ARMY PRIVATE FIRST CLASS (PFC) ERIC DORAN JENKINS AND CONSISTING OF: COMPONENT (A) HANDWRITTEN POEM & COMPONENT (B) HANDWRITTEN ENVELOPE. COMPONENT (A) HANDWRITTEN POEM. THE OBJECT CONSISTS OF A POEM HANDWRITTEN IN BLUE INK AND BLOCK SCRIPT UPON A SMALL, RECTANGULARLY SHAPED SHEET OF IVORY COLORED, UNLINED STATIONERY PAPER. THE POEM IS UNTITLED, IS AUTHORED BY PFC JENKINS, AND IS COMPRISED OF SIX (6) STANZAS AND TWELVE (12) TOTAL LINES. IN CONTENT, THE POEM IS TOLD FROM THE AUTHOR'S PERSPECTIVE OF WALKING ALONG A BEACH AND DISCOVERING A LONELY SEASHELL, "SCRATCHED BY SEAS / AND SANDS OF / TIME". THE POEM THEN PROCEEDS TO DRAW AN ANALOGY BETWEEN THE AUTHOR AND THE SEASHELL, "I, TOO, AM A LONELY / SHELL", AND CONCLUDES WITH THE LINES, "HOLD ME CLOSE / AND YOU WILL HEAR / THE OCEAN ROAR." THE HANDWRITTEN POEM WAS ORIGINALLY DISCOVERED AT THE WALL FOLDED IN HALF (1/2) AND HOUSED INSIDE COMPONENT (B) ALONG WITH THE ASSOCIATED COLOR PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT (VIVE (9737)). COMPONENT (B) HANDWRITTEN ENVELOPE. THE OBJECT CONSISTS OF A RECTANGULARLY SHAPED, IVORY COLORED PAPER ENVELOPE BEARING A TRIANGULARLY SHAPED, ADHESIVE CLOSURE FLAP AT THE REVERSE OBJECT SURFACE. AN INSCRIPTION HANDWRITTEN IN BLUE INK AND BLOCK SCRIPT/ARABIC NUMERALS AT THE CENTER OF THE OBVERSE OBJECT SURFACE READS, "PFC. ERIC D. JENKINS / US 54903937 / CO C. 3/22 INF / 25TH DIV." COMPONENT (A) WAS ORIGINALLY DISCOVERED AT THE WALL FOLDED IN HALF (1/2) AND HOUSED INSIDE THE ENVELOPE, ALONG WITH THE ASSOCIATED COLOR PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT (VIVE (9737)). ACCORDING TO VIVE CATALOG NOTES PREPARED BY MRCE COLLECTIONS STAFF, THE COLLECTIONS PHOTOGRAPHY CITATION PERTAINING TO THE ARTIFACT RECORD IS RECORDED AS FOLLOWS: "CD 10, ROLL C, #14-15".
