Vietnam Veterans Memorial (VVM) name rubbing for U.S. Marine Corps Private First Class (PFC) Michael Jefferson Greeley upon a VVM Wall rubbing sheet. A note handwritten upon the reverse surface of the name rubbing reads, "I think of you often. / Was it worth it? / L, / C". The artifact was left at The Wall by an anonymous donor identified only by the initial, "C" between June - July 1989.

ITEM DESCRIPTION

VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL (VVM) NAME RUBBING FOR U.S. MARINE CORPS PRIVATE FIRST CLASS (PFC) MICHAEL JEFFERSON GREELEY. THE OBJECT CONSISTS OF A RUBBED IMPRESSION OF THE VVM WALL HONOREE NAME, "MICHAEL J GREELEY" EXECUTED TWICE (INVERTED) IN GRAPHITE PENCIL AND BLOCK SCRIPT UPON THE CENTER OF THE OBVERSE OBJECT SURFACE OF A VVM WALL RUBBING SHEET. THE WALL RUBBING SHEET CONSISTS OF A RECTANGULARLY SHAPED SHEET OF WHITE, UNLINED PAPER WITH A RECTANGULARLY SHAPED, BLACK PRINTED BORDER AND THE DATES OF AMERICAN INVOLVEMENT IN THE VIETNAM WAR, "1959" AND, "1975" PRINTED IN BLACK INK AND ARABIC NUMERALS WITH AN ACCOMPANYING QUOTATION FOR EACH PRINTED IN BLACK INK AND BLOCK SCRIPT/ARABIC NUMERALS AT THE UPPER, PROPER LEFT-HAND AND LOWER, PROPER RIGHT-HAND CORNERS OF THE OBVERSE OBJECT SURFACE, RESPECTIVELY. A NOTE HANDWRITTEN IN GRAPHITE PENCIL AND VERTICALLY-ORIENTED BLOCK SCRIPT UPON THE PROPER RIGHT-HAND SIDE OF THE REVERSE OBJECT SURFACE READS, "I THINK OF YOU OFTEN. / WAS IT WORTH IT? / L, / C". ACCORDING TO VIVE CATALOG NOTES PREPARED BY MRCE COLLECTIONS STAFF, AN NPS RANGER'S TAG ORIGINALLY DISCOVERED WITH THE ARTIFACT READ, "6/399 6/377 ME".
