rubbing, VVM name
Vietnam Veterans Memorial (VVM) name rubbing for U.S. Marine Corps Private First Class (PFC) Bruce Allan Baker. A note handwritten upon the reverse surface of the name rubbing is addressed, "Hi Bruce", is signed, "Love, / "Sylvester" / (Car Ca)", is dated, "5-30-87", and reads, "Thanks for showing me what the statistics ment [sic]." The artifact was left at The Wall by a donor identified only as, "Sylvester" on May 30, 1987.

THE OBJECT CONSISTS OF A RUBBED IMPRESSION OF THE VVM WALL HONOREE NAME, "BRUCE A BAKER" EXECUTED IN GRAPHITE PENCIL AND BLOCK SCRIPT UPON THE CENTER OF THE OBVERSE OBJECT SURFACE OF A RECTANGULARLY SHAPED SHEET OF WHITE, UNLINED PAPER. A NOTE HANDWRITTEN IN GRAPHITE PENCIL AND VERTICALLY-ORIENTED, BLOCK SCRIPT/ARABIC NUMERALS UPON THE PROPER LEFT-HAND SIDE OF THE REVERSE OBJECT SURFACE IS ADDRESSED, "HI BRUCE", IS SIGNED, "LOVE, / "SYLVESTER" / (CAR CA)", IS DATED, "5-30-87", AND READS, "THANKS FOR SHOWING ME WHAT THE STATISTICS MENT [sic]." THE HANDWRITTEN NOTE UPON THE REVERSE OBJECT SURFACE IS COMPOSED IN SUCH A MANNER THAT IT CAN BE READ UPON THE EXTERIOR SURFACE OF THE OBJECT WHEN THE NAME RUBBING IS FOLDED IN HALF (1/2).
