VVMF has set a date for the 2021 In Memory ceremony. We will gather in Washington D.C. on Saturday, October 16th to honor our 2021 In Memory honorees. After the delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are all anxious to honor these 362 Vietnam veterans for their service and sacrifice.
When making your decision on whether or not you can attend in October, please consider the following:
– At this time, masks are required in all areas where we would have events. Both outdoors at the ceremony and indoors for our optional dinner, on bus transportation, etc. so you should assume that you would be required to wear a mask for all functions except for when you step onto the stage to read your veteran’s name.
– Depending on local COVID guidelines, we could have to limit the number of attendees. While this is not something we want to do – it may be the only way we can host an in-person ceremony. If we have to do this – the number would be two per honoree. We will keep you posted as guidelines are raised but as an example – today’s guidelines are for a maximum of 250 attendees. We are hopeful that number will go up by October and we will keep you posted as guidelines change and we can guarantee additional seating. We appreciate your understanding on these potential limitations. Note that we are NOT combining the 2020 and 2021 honoree groups into one ceremony. The ceremonies will be on two different days in order to ensure that we can have the maximum number of attendees allowed for each honoree.
– Lastly – If COVID numbers surge and guidelines go in the opposite direction so that it does not allow for VVMF to host an in-person In Memory ceremony in 2021 – we will move forward with virtual ceremonies to induct our 2020 and 2021 honorees. This is not the route we want to go because In Memory is a participatory ceremony, but the COVID guideline issue is not within our control. Please know that if numbers start going in the wrong direction, we promise that a final decision will be made no later than 60 days prior to the week of the ceremony in October so you can confirm your travel plans.
While we understand that this date may not work for everyone, we sincerely hope that you will be able to attend. Please know though – that if you cannot attend – we will still honor your loved one. A volunteer will take your honoree’s tribute to the stage and read their name. We will continue with our plans to livestream the event on our Facebook page so that you can watch from home. If you are not able to attend the ceremony the applicant will receive a mailing, after the ceremony in October, consisting of a copy of the 2021 Yearbook, the honoree’s personal Tribute Certificate, an In Memory pin and a DVD of the ceremony.
