I remember Albert Collins

Albert Collins, who served with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division was the first man killed by hostile action in the 22nd Infantry Regiment and the 4th Infantry Division in Vietnam.

The plan was for the division base camp to be named after the first man killed in action. Unfortunately, the Commanding General's name was also Collins (MG Arthur Collins) so the base camp was not named after Albert Collins because of that.

Albert Collins is buried in the Marietta National Cemetery in Marietta, GA. Each Memorial Day, a wreath of flowers is laid on his grave as a tribute from the men of the 22nd Infantry Regiment Society and the National 4th Infantry Division Assn.

Personally, I never knew Albert Collins but was operating just to the south of where he was killed - as part of B/1-22. Our mission quickly changed as we moved up the valley to provide support to C/1-22. No others were killed as part of that action.
