Ground Casualty
SP4 Emory T. Coates was a Light-Wheel Vehicle Mechanic serving with the 173rd Engineer Company, 173rd Airborne Brigade, U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam. Based at Camp Radcliff, the 173rd was the longest serving U.S. Army ground combat brigade in Vietnam. Deployed in Military Region II, during 1970 it stood vigil over National Route QL-19 and Binh Dinh Province’s western approaches. In early September 1970, Emory was at the port of Qui Nhon when he went on sick call on the 3rd. He was treated and held at B Medical, 173rd Support Battalion, then transferred to the 67th Evacuation Hospital at Qui Nhon where he was admitted for meningoencephalitis, a viral infection of the brain and brain covering (meninges). Despite intensive antiviral therapy to save his life, Emory expired two days after being hospitalized. He was 20 years old. Emory was posthumously promoted to Sergeant.
