As mention from my cousin(Menee Anderson), my dear uncle Alto I never met you, but I have heard how you were so wonderful. It is good to know we had such a brilliant uncle that fought for our country. You will always be remembered and missed. We will always tell our children and others what wonderful things you have done.

SSGT Alto Anderson became my platoon sargent when I was assigned to the 3/8th Infantry, A Co., 1st Platoon in March 1968. I was on the same truck in the convoy from Pleiku to Dakto. I got to know him very well since I was the platoon medic. While he had distinguished himself during the Tet Offensive earlier, he never told me about his heroism. We went on numerous combat assault (CA) and search and destroy (SAD) missions before his fatal one on June 12th. Earlier that day as the platoon combat medic, I tried to talk him into processing out of the country since he had about 3 days left in country. He refused. I believe he was depressed and did not want to go home. Earlier he talked a lot about going home to get married. Suddenly, he was very sad. He went on he last mission on June 12th despite my attempt to stop him. I sat across from him on a light aircraft (C-?) to Kontum Province, where we boarded Huey gunships to our staging area. Read Major Obsession (ebook) to get more details. I was with him on a hill when mortars suddenly rained down on us. There were two combat engineers with us sharing the same shadow hole. I got up to search for wounded troops a few meters away from his side and told him I would be back. Seconds later two mortars were fired from the valley below. That was it. The three, including SSGT. Anderson, who I was elbow to elbow with were killed. SSGT. Anderson was literally cut in two by an enemy motar. He died a hero and is a credit to our brave men and women in uniform.

He was a wonderful brother to both of us my twin sister and I missed him very much.
