The Day of the Mission

WO Curtis Andersen was in my unit, A-Troop of the 717 Air Cav. We were located at Camp Enari, near Pleiku, in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Camp Enari was the home of the 4th Infantry Division. Curtis and I were both Cobra gunship pilots waiting for the Cobras to arrive in country for A-Troop. He was assigned to fly OH-6 Scout helicopters doing reconnaissance, and I was assigned to fly UH-1 Hueys doing troop insertions after we made enemy contact. We were roommates. On the day he was killed, we had intense contact with a large enemy unit. Curtis was flying wing ship for the Scout team when they received fire from a 50-caliber anti-aircraft weapon. Curtis was providing suppressing fire for his lead helicopter when his LOH was hit and went down. WO Andersen was a quiet guy. He always performed his duties well. He was an excellent pilot and a credit to the Warrant Officer corps. We flew together on many missions. I will always miss him.

Not forgotten

Curtis, Although we never met, I just want you to know you are not forgotten. You gave the ultimate sacrifice, your life for what you believed in. Sleep well my friend, and thank you for protecting the freedoms we enjoy today.
