Final Mission of 1LT Michael D. Chwan
On September 30, 1965, a USAF F-4C Phantom II (#64-0660) from the 47th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 15th Tactical Fighter Wing (on temporary duty from the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing), stationed at Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, was on a strike mission against the Ninh Binh Bridge in North Vietnam when it was shot down and crashed with the loss of both crew members. There are conflicting accounts of the cause of the downing of the aircraft, one source stating it was anti-aircraft fire, and another attributing the loss to an SA-2 surface-to-air missile. The lost crewmen included CAPT Chambless M. Chesnutt and 1LT Michael D. Chwan. The two airmen were not recovered and they were listed as Missing in Action. In March 1985, their remains were repatriated and they were positively identified the following month. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org, 8tfw.org, and ejection-history.org.uk]

Captain Michael Chwan
Dear Chwan Family,
I have recently come across Captain Chwan's "MIA Bracelet", that I wore a very long time ago.
I am almost 54 now and have kept this for safe, in hopes of getting it to his family someday.
Please contact me and I will forward this to you.
Thank You Captain Chwan for your service to our country.
God Bless You!
Sincerely,
Mala

48 years later.....
Michael - so hard to believe that it has been all these years you are gone.... You are still loved, still remembered and still missed. You'd be so proud of your daughter Michele, though you never saw her in this life. She has your smile, your artistic talent, your personality and your sweetness. I am blessed that you were in my life however briefly and that you left me Michele. your wife, Dana, Santa Fe, NM

Remembering An American Hero
Dear Captain Michael Daniel Chwan, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter
