Attack on Camp Carroll - April 27, 1968

Camp Carroll was a U.S. Marine Corps and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) artillery base during the Vietnam War. It was located five miles southwest of Cam Lo in Quang Tri Province, RVN. On April 27, 1968, Camp Carroll received a total of thirty-two unknown caliber artillery rounds and seven rocket rounds. The twenty-two-minute attack began at 10:32 AM. The enemy rounds landed within the camp perimeter resulting in one Marine death, LCPL Rickey L. Chran, a cook with Headquarters & Service Company, 2nd Battalion, 26th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. Chran sustained fragmentation wounds to the head. Five others were wounded, two requiring medivac, the other three considered minor injuries. Counter artillery was fired at two suspected enemy positions with unreported results. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and “Command Chronology, 2nd Bn., 26th MAR (Rein) FMF” at archives.gov]
