THANK YOU

I am a high school student at Gridley High School and I am doing this for my U.S. History class and I just wanted to say thank you. You decided to have a respondsibilty to serve and protect our country. I didn't personally know you but I want to thank you for giving your life up to serve and protect people that you don't even know.

My Second Cousin and Neighbor

Howard's mother, Pearl Crecraft Chase and my paternal grandmother, Mildred Crecraft Custard, are sisters. I remember attending the family bon voyage for Howard just before he left for Vietnam. I was a boy, too timid to approach Howard (I admired him!) for a goodbye handshake, along with the older family members. The adults encouraged me so with that little prodding I went up to him and shook his hand. I will never forget the feeling of pride I had for my big cousin as I shook his hand; to this day I carry that sense of pride with me. I remember him smiling at me. The funeral was sad ... isn't it odd sometimes what images the memory holds onto? I remember Howard had requested blue roses should anything happen to him at war. There were blue roses at his funeral. I remember being off school those few days so I could comfort (my Mom & Dad said) my cousin Clarence, Howard's younger brother. We went sledriding just up the road from the Chase's house, on Miller Hill ... the locals will know the place. Family gatherings, young and in between and old, handshakes, smiles, sledriding in small towns ... all part of the American story ... as is Howard's life and service to our country. Thanks, Howard.

He is my second cousin

We called him Howard. He is my second cousin. I was just a small little girl, but I remember when Howard came home on leave. He played with us and took turns throwing myself and other siblings on the beds. My mom always told me Howard was a wonderful person. To this day she still has the little wax Christmas tree candles that she sent him for Christmas that year.Of course they were returned in the mail to her. Every Christmas, as long as I can remember they have always gone up on the kitchen window sill to remember him and they will again this year
