He had enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Entered the service via Reserve Military. Served during the Vietnam War. He began his tour on November 14, 1967. Charles had the rank of Private First Class. His military occupation or specialty was Rifleman. Service number assignment was 2230101. Attached to 1st Marine Division, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, K Company.

During his service in the Vietnam War, Marine Corps Private First Class Charles experienced a traumatic event which ultimately resulted in loss of life on March 3, 1968. Recorded circumstances attributed to: Died through hostile action, small arms fire. Incident location: South Vietnam, Quang Nam province.

PFC Michael Lane Charles was a member of a squad on combat patrol south of Hill 55 in the vicinity of the village complex of Giang La in Dien Ban District. They received several rounds of sniper fire from across the river. PFC Charles was hit and killed by the hostile rifle fire.

Michael Lane Charles is buried or memorialized at Citizens Cemetery, Bristol, Bristol City, Virginia.
Michael is honored on the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Washington DC. Name inscribed at VVM Wall, Panel 42e, Line 49.
