Final Mission of SP4 Allen B. Chamberlain

SP4 Allen B. Chamberlain was an infantryman serving with A Company (“Black Jacks”), 4th Aviation Battalion, 4th Infantry Division. On February 15, 1967, during Operation Sam Houston, SP4 Chamberlain was a crewman on a UH-1D model helicopter participating in a battalion-sized lift of troops being combat assaulted into a location designated LZ 501N in Kontum Province, RVN. After his ship offloaded its troops, it was lifting off out of the LZ when the aircraft was raked by enemy small arms fire. Rounds entered the nose bubble of the helicopter, hitting the pilot in the ankle and causing him to lose control of the aircraft. It rolled to the right and crashed in the LZ. Both pilots were injured, however, they and the crew chief were able exit the downed helicopter. Chamberlain was fatally injured when the aircraft’s transmission came loose and landed on him, trapping him underneath the burning helicopter. Because of the tactical situation on the ground, the injured pilots and crew chief could not be evacuated for over four hours. Chamberlain was recovered after the crash site was secured by Allied forces. The transmission was lifted off him and his remains were removed to Graves Registration in Pleiku.
