CARNEY, YOU WERE MY BUD

Hey, pal. Been nearly 54 years since that ugly morning that we went down side by side. Truth be told, you were (and are) one of my personal heroes, You never, ever shirked duty or responsibility. Your sense of humor was irrepressible and your grin immediate and genuine. Been to visit you a few times at The Wall, and have a rubbing framed in my home office. Every time I salute the beautiful American flag (which is often) you are on my mind. Our last night together on night ambush in a dry rice paddy stuffed with hungry mosquitoes is as real today as it was in 1968. From Ft. Jackson SC to Camp Evans to Tet to Khe Sahn to the A Shau Valley, we lived a lot of adventure together. My only misgiving about the time over there is that you did not survive. I grieve greatly. Carney, you were a warrior and I am honored and proud that you saw something worthwhile in me that allowed us to be friends. God bless you, buddy. I'm an old man now, ravaged by Agent Orange. My time left is short. But I don't fear the end since we will be reunited, walking point side-by-side again in yet another unknown adventure. PS: glad to see that Dick Miller dropped in here, struggling to find the words that would express his remorse. You are greatly missed.

Your Air Cav bud,
Bazz

do not stand at my grave and weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SP4 George Austin Carney, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
