Today you are my guest
Stephen,
Each year on Memorial Day, I bring one of you great men who sacrificed all to life. I pick at random from whatever service, conflict, and state of origin. While I served my time in the Marine Corps, I learned to honor and remember those who did not make it back home.
Today, you will have a place sitting at the head of my dinner table. You will have a cold beer, a clean plate, a linen napkin, and your picture as a reservation in place. Whatever you desire, you may have.
I will read aloud any information I can find about you and your unit. I will talk about you and those you left behind. I will personally thank you for what you did and will always feel in awe of everything you gave.
Thank you, Stephen and Godspeed.
Raphael Cuthbertson II

Final Mission of SP5 Stephen G. Carlos
SP5 Stephen G. Carlos was a UH-1 helicopter mechanic and door gunner serving with the “Snoopy Scouts” of Headquarters & Headquarters Company (HHC), 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. On March 7, 1968, SP5 Carlos was the gunner on a Command & Control ship on a mission over Thua Thien Province, RVN. While the aircraft was conducting a low-level flight over some troops to determine their location, it was fired on by a hostile ground force. One of the rounds struck Carlos under the chin, critically injuring him. He was taken to the Med Station at Camp Evans for triage before being transferred by medivac to a hospital in Phu Bai where he succumbed to his injury. Thank You
Dear Spec 5 Stephen Carlos,
Thank you for your service as a Huey, UH-1 Helicopter Repairer with the 1st Cavalry. It is the last day of September, and time continues to quickly pass. It is important for us all to acknowledge the sacrifices of those like you who answered our nation's call. Please watch over America, it stills needs your courage and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.
