Remembering An American Hero

Dear PFC William Roger Campbell, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

From My Dad

Bill was a member of the Explorer Post at the Butler State Police Barracks, and my Dad was their leader. Bill wanted to be a Pennsylvania State Trooper, and would come over to the house just to talk about that with my Dad. I remember one of Bill's letters he wrote to my Dad while in basic training. He was concerned if any bad marksmanship scores would effect his acceptance into the Hershey Police Academy. My Dad assured him everything would be fine when he got to Hershey.

Bill was only a year out of high school when he was killed in Vietam. His Mother wrote such a nice letter, thanking my Dad for being so kind to her Son when he was an Explorer. My Dad carried the grief of Bill's death around for a long time. He knew Bill Campbell was a good person, and would have made a fine State Trooper.
