Remembering An American Hero

Dear CPL Larry Gene Campbell, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

Brother, You will never be forgotten

When our boys come home in triumph, brother,
With the laurels they shall gain;
When we go to give them welcome, brother,
We shall look for you in vain.
We shall wait for your returning, brother,
Though we know it cannot be;
For your comrades left you sleeping, brother,
Underneath a southern tree.

Sleeping to waken
In this weary world no more;
Sleeping for your true-lov'd country, brother,
Sleeping for the flag you bore.

You were the first on duty, brother,
When 'to arms' your leader cried--
You have left the ranks forever, brother,
You have laid your armies aside.
From the awful scenes of battle, brother,
You were set forever free,
When your comrades left you sleeping, brother,
Underneath that southern tree.

You have cross'd the clouded river, brother,
To the mansions of the best,
'When the wicked cease from troubling,' brother,
'And the weary are at rest.'
Surely we would not recall you, brother,
But the tears flow fast and free,
When we think of you sleeping, brother,
Underneath a southern tree.

Open Letter To A Great Friend

A good true friend thru the last 3 years of grade school (when Larry came to South Park Elementary) and all thru high school (Lafayette HS). We played at each others house and doubled dated in HS. He was a friend to all he met, his winning trait was his dimpled smile, which no one could resist. Larry was quiet, soft spoken and a gentle guy, an all around good guy, man and I'm sure Marine, the USMC was better for him being one of thiers'.

Old South Park is gone now, has been for a long time now. Your old neighborhood still looks near the same, a few changes, a couple of houses gone, otherwise, the same. South Park, well, not much left now, the Drug store with the soda fountain is gone, the hardware store closed, no grocery store now, no Varity store, only thing really left is the lumber yard. Kind of sad.

Old buddy, remember that double date we had back in '64 to the ROTC ball. Sarge said we had to have dates, so you and your date fixed me up. Well, as you remember, turns out I married your date in '66. Been together almost 37 years now, think I'm on to something good here. Had it not been for you, I might not have met her. Thanks guy. I sure wish you could have met our daughter, you two would be great friends.

It is still like yesterday we were all talking in front of my folks place, that was late spring or early summer '67 before you went over. I was at your funeral, the Marines did a 1st class job. I went over in '68. It changed us all at least a little.

Even though the good old USA got a little off base in that war, we all thank you for your service and regret the price it cost. No one who knew you will ever forget you, I know you would blush at this, but you were a great guy, we miss you buddy.

I will never forget you buddy. You are sorely missed.
