REMEMBRANCES
I served with Doc Caldwell
Doc and I lived in the same hooch at C Co. 3rd M.P. bn.He was a quiet fellow and when we teased him with 'squid' jokes he rarely took the bait. He knew he was out numbered by theMarines that he tended too. Marines took it as Tradition to kid with their Squids. But heaven help the outsider that that so much as muttered an insult.
We all had deep respect for our Squids and Doc desired every bit of it.
Semper Fi Doc. You are remembered.

Salute to a Fellow Veteran
A poem to my big brother
Here is a portion of the poem I wrote more than 40 years ago to 'Skipper' when he died:
'You may not know it, but when you died...a part of my life slipped away and left a void to be filled only by the memories...I don't know if you liked your big brother role, but you played it well and seldomed complained...I envied you ...because you saw what so many of us, blinded by convention could never see. You had no need for status symbols, nor would you accept them. You measured by honesty alone....Those you counted as your friends could be assured of honesty, sincerity and a helping hand in any service. And when it came time for you to serve your country you went neither begrudingly nor as a hero to battle but as you had always gone before...to do a job...as you selflessly worked to heal instead of wound. When they brought you back I cried ... for those of us... who must continue to look [for peace] without the presence of the curly haired boy who had become a man. All I have left now are the memories...Only time will ease the pain but the scar will always remain in that corner of my life where you once lived.'
That scar remains, now more than 40 years later, but you live on in my memories. I will always love you.
