Final Mission of PFC Roy Allen
PFC Roy Allen served with B Company, 8th Engineer Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division. PFC Allen’s military occupation specialty labeled him a “Pioneer,” a soldier employed to perform engineering and construction tasks. At approximately 8:15 AM on February 26, 1968, PFC Allen was traveling on a U.S. Army LCU (equipment transport vessel) on the Cua Viet River in Quang Tri Province, RVN, when it and another LCU were attacked by a hostile force employing recoilless rifle and mortar fire. Allen was fatally injured after being struck by metal fragments. Six other Army personnel were injured. Minor damage was reportedly done to the boats. Allen was posthumously promoted to Corporal.
