Final Mission of PFC Robert S. Allen
PFC Robert S. Allen was killed during the Battle of An Bao on May 5th, 1968. This action was one of the most significant battles experienced by the 1st Battalion, 50th Infantry during its tour in Vietnam. PFC Allen was seen bravely directing fire from his armored personnel carrier (APC) in an attempted counter attack as his A Company was surrounded by a vastly superior force. His heroic efforts ended when his APC was hit by enemy RPG fire. [Taken from ichiban1.org]

Gone, but not forgotten...
We grew up on the same block. Robert was older, and time has dimmed my memory of him, but he is not forgotten. I think about how far it was from Newkirk Ave. to Vietnam, and how young Robert, and his fellow soldiers were, when they made the transition from their neighborhoods, and blocks, to fight for our country.
I think of his courage, and a life cut short - way too short, and I will remember him for as long as I live.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear CPL Robert Samuel Allen, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter
