Ground Casualty
MAJ Herbert H. Butt Jr. served with Advisory Team 60, Military Assist Command, Vietnam (MACV) Advisors. Team 60 was located in Vinh Binh Province in the Mekong Delta in IV Corps Military Region of the Republic of Vietnam. Butt arrived in the summer of 1967, and was assigned to the Headquarters Team as a military liaison for the 14th Infantry Regiment, 9th Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) Division. On January 29, 1968, he was found lifeless in his quarters at Phu Vinh. Postmortem studies determined he died from aspiration due to acute alcohol intoxication. Aspiration occurs when foreign material is inhaled into the airway causing asphyxiation due to a blocked respiratory tract. In healthy adults, it may occur during sleep when the sedating effects of alcohol impair cough and gag reflexes. Butt, 31, was an eight-year Army veteran and son of COL Herbert H. Butt Sr., a World War II and Korean War veteran. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and macvteams.org]

Temple University 1965-66
I enjoyed being a student of Captain Butt as he taught us about such topics as the battle of Cowpens and others during the Revolutionary War at Temple University. He was taken from us way too soon during Tet. He did inspire me to serve 21 years in the Army as a helicopter pilot with two tours of duty in Vietnam.

Officer and a Gentleman
MAJ Butt was one of the Assistant Professors of Military Science when I was a member of the Corps of Cadets in Temple University ROTC. He was always willing to give advice and pointers on how to be a good officer. I have always remembered him as an example of the best who served and gave their all to protect our country.
