My family in Hammond shared memories of him this weekend.
My aunt Karen Voros Westerhouse grew up with the boy she knows as John Abbott (no rank) in the Woodmar neighborhood of Hammond, Indiana. This weekend we each visited Hammond for a family wedding and during table conversation at the home of Karen's mother (my grandmother, Eleanor Voros still lives in Hammond) they started reminiscing about John from his youth. Karen has family photos of him that they want to give to his family, and asked me to find resources to locate them. In my search for John, in addition to my family's anecdotes of him as a child, he has come to life for me...and I am moved to tears that his life has affected others besides my aunt and my 92-year-old grandmother who also regaled us with tales from her perspective as a mother role model. He was a respected Marine to most of you, but also a dear friend to those who loved him before he became a hero.

To My Brother's Godfather
I didn't know you. My Dad was your friend and my brother was your Godson. My Dad speaks of you still and I have seen your name on the wall. You will always be remembered.
We are alive and well because of men like you and my Dad. Thank you for your service and your sacrifice. God Bless.
