Remembering An American Hero
Dear QM2 Lanny Howard Buroff, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
With respect, Sir
Curt Carter

Fair winds and following seas, My brother.
"AA-Rab" and I did our tours in Cam Ranh Bay together from Nov 67 to Nov 68. He bought a new Barracuda before going home and had it delivered to Long Beach, thinking he'd get that west coast DD he put in for on his dream sheet. Instead, once the new car was delivered, he got orders to Pax River, Md. He left Nam a week before me and went to LA to visit a girlfriend and pick up the car. I got a Newport DD, so the plan was to land at SeaTac, take a bus to LA and meet him there. We did that and after spending a week of our 30 day leave hanging out with his lady (and her sister...I wonder whatever happened to her?), we headed out across country to the East Coast. Brothers, there is nothing on this planet like 3 pedals on the floor, a four speed in your right hand and nothing but FREEDOM in the headlights!
I can still hear Glen Campbell's, Wichita Lineman, on the 8 track!
We made it to his folk's place in Chicago, but got T-boned by a girl in a Mustang running a stop sign in the rain. Damn! Totaled the Barracuda. He got a date with her that night and they put me on a plane at O'Hare for the flight home to Albany. Nobody knew I was coming home! Surprised the hell out of Mom and Dad. Lost track of "AA-Rab" until he popped up a few years ago on the virtual wall. I had no idea. I love you, brother. We had some great times in November '68. Rest in Peace.
