Silver Star
Awarded for actions during the Vietnam War
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Michael Louis Browning (MCSN: 2251278), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Grenadier with Company B, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in the Republic of Vietnam on 24 October 1967. While Lance Corporal Browning's squad was on a search and clear mission in the vicinity of the Tuy Loan River in Quang Nam Province, the point man and an companion were seriously injured when a booby trap was accidentally detonated. Ignoring the probable presence of other booby traps in the area, Lance Corporal Browning quickly moved forward to assist the wounded men. After rendering first aid, he placed one of the casualties across his shoulders and was proceeding toward the landing zone, when he detonated another booby trap hidden in the thick brushwood. With exceptional presence of mind, he placed the wounded man on the ground and, disregarding his own safety, shielded him from the blast with his own body. As a result of his intrepid actions, Lance Corporal Browning was mortally wounded by fragments from the exploding mine. His valiant effort to save the life of a fellow Marine at the risk of his own was an inspiration to all with whom he served. By his extraordinary courage, determination and selfless devotion to duty, he upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear LCPL Michael Louis Browning, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter

Your Angel Day
On this your angel day I humbly give thanks for your service and sacrifice and with honor I leave you this poem . . .
A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam
And for a brief moment its glory
and beauty belong to our world
But then it flies again
And though we wish it could have stayed...
We feel lucky to have seen it.
