A gentle soul, A proud Marine
Raymond, more often called Randy, was my cousin and dear friend. His talents were many, he had a beautiful singing voice, he painted, and wrote poetry. He was also so proud to be a Marine. He was killed just a few weeks after volunteering for his second tour of duty in Nam. I remember a poem that he wrote that began "Pick up your armour and fight, young man, defend your country's name." He believed in the mission in Viet Nam and ultimately gave his life for his beliefs and love of country. His mother and father used his death benefit insurance money to purchase a special headstone for his grave - a statue of a Marine praying over his grave. It is a reminder to all who see it that our freedoms are precious and come with a great cost.

Not forgotten
Raymond, Although we never met, I just want you to know you are not forgotten. You gave the ultimate sacrifice, your life for what you believed in. Sleep well and thank you.

Raymond - a sweet classmate
I first remember Raymond sitting near me in Mrs. Dutton's 6th grade class. He was sweet and friendly and (especially for an adolescent boy!) easy to talk with, and we became good friends. I know I had a young girl's crush on him for a while, but he had eyes for others. After high school, he became engaged to my friend and neighbor, Carole. Raymond was an artist - drawing and painting came very easy and naturally to him. It would have been wonderful to see what art he could have left the world, had he more years to hone his skills, and share his work. Raymond remained a good friend all through our school years. After graduation, we went our different paths. I on to college, and Raymond onto war. I can still picture his smiling face.
