THE WALL OF FACES

FA James E. Young was a Fireman Apprentice serving abord the tank landing ship USS Outagamie County (LST-1073). In the late summer of 1967, Outagamie County shuttled troops and supplies between Japan, the Philippines, and Vietnam. On August 27, 1967, during an offloading stop at Cua Viet Base in Quang Tri Province, RVN, members of the crew were allowed time-off, and at 1:00 PM some went recreational swimming at Cua Viet Beach. FA Young was reported missing from the swimming party a half hour later. A thorough search of the ship was commenced, and a crew mustering revealed Young was not present. An LCVP (personnel landing craft) was placed in the water and began searching the area. By late afternoon, Young had not been located and was presumed drowned. His remains were later located. Dear FA James Edward Young, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

Although we never met personally, I want to thank you James Edward Young, for your courageous and valiant service, faithful contribution, and most holy sacrifice, given to this great country of ours!

Your Spirit is alive--and strong, therefore Mate, you shall never be forgotten, nor has your death been in vain!
